Minor Update 16/04/2025

Wow, among my friends and classmates and even new peeps over here, this is by far the game that received the most positive reception of the bunch! Definitely my proudest and most "complete" game too with a proper itch.io page. This is the first time I went back and updated a game, I never bother for school projects since I would have other assignments to move on and focus on but I just had to give it some quality of life changes that I always intended it to have. This is my first time I've ever made a devlog on a game as well.
Updates:
- Managed to fix the bug with my pause menu causing the game to freeze whenever the reset button or menu button is clicked, allowing me to add a reset and back-to-menu button to my pause screen.
- Added run and fastfall effects to make the act of running and fastfalling more obvious to the player.
- Added a controls page to the main menu .
- Zoomed the camera out a little bit more.
- Made it so that the player dies if walked offscreen too much to prevent softlocks.
- Adjusted part of the level geometry.
- Added in a shortcut R to quickly reset the level for speedrunning purposes.
Will I expand on this game more? I think there is a lot of potential here for the game concept as this game has hooked the interests of my speedrunning friends who enjoy the challenge to attain a better time on the leaderboard. However, I myself do not plan on working on this specific game anymore, mainly because of the leaderboard server not being in my control. As a school project, I opted to use a free online leaderboard asset to learn how making an online leaderboard works. A fully fleshed out and proper speedrunning game like this would ideally have a leaderboard that I can control, so next time I attempt a game like this, I will learn how to set up my own leaderboard server. I do still really like the overall artstyle and aesthetic of this game, so I might plan to redo this game in the future, except using my own assets this time instead of free assets.
But otherwise, I am very proud of this game project. The competition between my friends to strive for the best time has really inspired me on this type of speedrunning game. After seeing one of my friends figure out tricks and shortcuts to attain a better and better time, I realized the potential of games with leaderboards like this. So, you might see this lil mushroom guy return in the future!
